PEREZ RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The Perez Research Fellowship is a one-year stipended fellowship for social science graduate students and professionals of color who want to learn about and contribute to the field of applied research and consulting. Established in honor of our founder’s mother, Dora Perez, fellows receive training in research methodologies, participate in research projects, build their professional networks, and enjoy the opportunity to learn from a leading community-centered research and design firm. Upon successful completion, a small number of fellows may be invited to extend their participation for an additional year.

KEY DATES

  • Applications for the 2024 PRF will open in mid October, and will be due December 11, 2023
  • Select applicants will be interviewed in January of 2024
  • The fellowship will begin in February of 2024

FELLOWSHIP REQUIRMENTS & BENEFITS

ELIGIBILITY

  • Self-identify as Latino, Black/African American, Native American, Arabic, or members of other communities that are under-represented in the field of applied research
  • Reside in the Bay Area and are able to attend fellowship activities and meetings in person at our BRG office in downtown Oakland
  • Are currently enrolled in, or have graduated from, a graduate program in public health, public policy, public administration, social welfare, or other social science at an accredited university or college. (In 2024 we are particularly recruiting for those with experience related to health equity, social determinants of health, and/or community coalition work to advance systems change.)
  • Work less than 28 hrs/week and have flexibility to attend fellowship meetings & activities during the work day (M-F, 9-5)

BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION

  • Participate in trainings covering applied research methods, equitable evaluation, and approaches to systems change
  • Expand networks and access to professional mentors, and learn about careers in applied research
  • Learn about the work of a cutting edge consulting firm and work directly with BRG clients on applied research projects
  • $6,000 total stipend, in monthly disbursements throughout the 2024 fellowship period

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Fellows will work 10-15 hours per month on fellowship activities and must have availability to conduct fellowship work during the work week (M-F, 9-5)

Founded in 2010 by Brightstar Ohlson, Bright Research Group (BRG) is a community-centered research, evaluation, design, and capacity building firm based in Oakland, CA.
